Captain Jack Sparrow Deluxe Adult Costume
Played by Johnny Depp in the Pirates of the Caribbean movies, Captain Jack Sparrow is a popular character with both kids and adults.
Depp played the fictional and unusual character of Captain Jack Sparrow in three of the Pirates of the Caribbean movies. In 2003 it was The Curse of the Black Pearl, in 2006 Dead Man’s Chest, and in 2007 his final Pirates movie was At World’s End.
In many ways, Jack Sparrow was a pirate ahead of the times. He liked to think of himself of a free spirited and slightly crazy character, but one who possesses a wise attitude. In a tough world, he shows that he is smart enough to survive without resorting to force. He is a trickster, who would rather use his wit and negotiating skills to avoid confrontation. “Why fight when you can negotiate”, he once said.
Most important of all, Jack Sparrow has a sense of honour. He reads and manipulates people for his own good, but avoids harming them, as even his enemies only get what they truly deserve.
Depp had a hand in the development of his own costume and appearance. He handpicked his signature leather hat. Other characters could not wear leather hats to make Sparrow’s unique.
His costume was relatively simple, but became easily recognisable from his knee length, tweed frock coat, his leather hat, and hair. He wore a wig to portray Sparrow’s dreadlocks, and wears different items in his hair including coins, beads and bones. The patterned red bandana, which is tied at the back, covers most of his hair, allowing only the dreadlocks to show.
In 2001, whilst visiting Walt Disney Studios, Depp heard of the plans to adapt the Disneyland ride, Pirates of the Caribbean, into a movie. After researching 18th century pirates, he compared pirates to modern rock stars, and decided to base his characters style on Keith Richards.
Many insiders questioned the casting of Depp for the Jack Sparrow character, but producer Jerry Bruckheimer was confident that his off beat style would appeal to both adults and children.
The end result was that the performance of Johnny Depp was highly acclaimed by most film critics. Not all agreed, but generally he was praised for his performance. He won a number of awards, and was nominated for both a Golden Globe and Academy Award.
